Carob cytogenetics

One, two, three? Place your bets

Magda Bou Dagher Kharrat's research team (FS-USJ) obtained a co-funding from the research council of the University of Saint Joseph (Beirut, Lebanon) and the  NGO Jouzour Loubnan to evaluate the genome size and the levels of polyploidy of Mediteranean carobs.

Objectif:

This initiative works with the DYNAMIC biological resources, and the access to a carob seed bank from different Mediterranean localities.

  • Establishment of a seed germination protocol
  • Flow cytometry analysis of 100-150 samples from 20-30 Mediterranean carob populations (Lebanon, Cyprus, France, Italy, Spain, Morocco)
  • Characterisation of genome size and polyploidy levels.

Funding:

  • 12 000$
